1. What is a TentBox?

A TentBox is a soft or hard shell rooftop tent that fits onto your car roof. It folds out in minutes to create a comfortable sleeping area, giving you the freedom to camp anywhere your car can go.

2. What’s included with the hire?

Your TentBox hire includes:

  • The TentBox model of your choice (Lite or XL)

  • A mattress and ladder

  • Instructions for safe fitting and use
    Optional extras are available too, such as:

  • Roof bars

  • Awnings

  • Dog packs

  • Additional camping gear

3. Do I need roof bars on my car?

Yes — TentBoxes require roof bars to be safely mounted. We offer Thule roof bars as an add-on. We work in partnership with a local roof bar specialist who has over 25 years of experience in all things roof bars. Save and Drive are industry leaders here in the North East!

4. Do you fit the TentBox for me?

Yes- the Tentbox is fitted on your car at our secure unit once you have your roof bars in place! We also provide clear instructions and offer phone/video support if needed. You are responsible for safe checking the TentBox before and during your trip.

5. Is it safe to drive with a TentBox on my car?

Yes — when fitted correctly and within your vehicle’s weight limits, TentBoxes are safe to drive with. We recommend:

  • Doing a full check before each journey

  • Re-checking after the first 100 miles

  • Not exceeding 70mph when the TentBox is fitted

6. Can I sleep in it wherever I park?

Legally, this depends on where you are. Wild camping rules vary by country and region. We recommend staying at approved campsites unless you’ve checked local rules. We can suggest fantastic sites in the North East and beyond!

7. What’s the difference between Peak and Off-Peak rates?

  • Peak: July, August, and school holidays (Easter, half terms, Christmas)

  • Off-Peak: All other times
    Pricing varies slightly depending on the season and TentBox model.

8. Can I bring my dog?

Absolutely — dogs are part of the adventure! We even offer an optional Dog Pack add-on with dog toys, blanket, treats and the bags for the not so glamorous side of being a dog parent!

9. Can I smoke or vape in the TentBox?

No. Smoking or vaping is strictly prohibited inside the TentBox. If there are signs of smoking, a cleaning/damage fee will be charged.

10. What happens if I damage the TentBox?

You are responsible for the TentBox while it's in your care. Any damage caused through misuse or incorrect fitting may result in charges. We recommend checking your travel insurance or home policy for cover. We also recommend driving cautiously and checking fittings regularly.

11. How do I book and pay?

Just fill in our enquiry form, and we’ll confirm availability. A small deposit secures your dates. Final payment and a refundable security deposit is due before collection or delivery.

12. Where are you based? Do you deliver?

We’re based in Durham, North East England. You can collect from us at our secure unit at: Kilburn Drive, Horden, SR8 4TQ.

We also work with a roof bar supply specialist who offers FREE fitting on all roof bar hires, based just 15 minutes away from the collection point at Silksworth.
